J.B. Holmes to Play in the 2008 AT&T Classic
(Duluth, Georgia, April 30, 2008) -- J.B. Holmes, winner of this year's FBR Classic and one of the game's longest hitters, will play in the 40th anniversary AT&T Classic, May 12-18 at TPC Sugarloaf. He joins Stewart Cink, Greg Norman, Retief Goosen, defending champion Zach Johnson and 151 more of the world's best golfers in the hunt for a total purse of $5.5 million and a first place check of $990,000. Here are some quick facts on Holmes:
- Holmes won the FBR Open in Phoenix for the second time, on this occasion defeating Phil Mickelson on the first hole of sudden death. He had previously captured the title in 2006, his initial win on the PGA TOUR. He became the first rookie to win in 2006 and also topped Goosen's record as the fastest TOUR member to collect $1 million. It took him just four events.
- During that rookie year he eventually earned $1,487,604 which ranked 59th. He also averaged 318.8 per measured drive, second to Bubba Watson by less than a yard.
- Last year his best finishes were a fourth place tie at the season-opening Mercedes-Benz Championship; an eighth place tie at the PODS Championship and a tie for ninth at the Children's Miracle Network Classic. Once again he finished second in driving distance to Watson, this time with a mark of 313.1.
- This year he is averaging 305.7 off the tee and leads the TOUR with 30% of his bombs traveling more than 320 yards and one rolling out to 389 yards. He ranks 9th on the money list with $1,535,195
- Holmes made a major statement at the PGA Qualifying tournament in 2005 when he went through all three stages and was medalist at Final Stage, firing a six-round total of 24-under-par. More than likely he holds the world record for most high school golf team letters won in his Kentucky home town. Holmes joined the team in the third grade and was the number one or number two man by the fifth grade. Later he starred at the University of Kentucky and played on the 2005 U.S. Walker Cup team.
